In 2009 Acid Jazz Records launched the RARE MOD series with an EP of unreleased 60s gems from mod legend Steve Marriott and his band The Moments (whom he fronted before forming the Small Faces with Ronnie Lane). This was followed up with the highly successful RARE MOD album, which blended a diverse collection of super rare or unreleased classics.
Now it's time for the second EP in the series. In the unique 60s style sleeve pioneered by the Marriott release, the band we have chosen are one of the unsung heroes of the mod scene...
The Fleur de Lys were most famous for their rip-roaring version of The Who's 'Circles' (released on Immediate) - a live version from '66 is included here, but the full story is far more interesting. In a long and varied history, soon to be explored in a full-length book released as a companion to this EP, The Fleurs were a prolific backing group for a whole host of American musicians who toured and settled here in the 60s. Out and out mods, they mixed elements of the psyche guitar scene with a growing understanding of soul music.
Featured here are some unreleased acetates featuring the vocals of Atlantic soul diva Sharon Tandy as well as their first ever recording and also includes the track ‘Wait For Me’, which was produced by Jimmy Page.
The band are playing their first gig for over 40 years featuring previous members as well as Ms Tandy at London's legendary 100 Club on 11th November.
