Given their rock pedigree it’s hardly surprising that the debut album from The Moons harks back to a golden era in British songwriting.
Fronted by Paul Weller’s keyboard player Andy Crofts and featuring Chris Ketley previously of the - recently disbanded - Rakes, the band craft soulful slices of classic English pop. Taking a traditional 60’s sound and weaving in influences as diverse as XTC and The Specials, the resulting album straddles the decades and sits comfortably alongside contemporary groups like The Coral, The Zutons and The Bees.
Andy Crofts, the creative force behind The Moons, writes with an engaging everyman appeal. Many of the songs on this twelve-track debut are autobiographical with love - lost and won - a residing theme. A glance through the track listing….Torn Between Two…..Let It Go….Lost Soul….bears this out. Given some lengthy periods on the road with Weller, the songs included on the album were written in a variety of locations – on a tour bus, a hotel room in LA, sitting in a London pub.
Not surprising Paul Weller has proved a big supporter, inviting The Moons to record the album at his studio and even featuring on piano on ‘Wondering” a song written when Crofts was a mere sixteen.
The band came to the attention of Acid Jazz label boss Eddie Piller when he heard their self financed 45 ‘Don’t Go Changin’ which he featured on his award-winning radio show on Q earlier this year. He encouraged the band to record this debut album, following the release of their limited edition 45 Torn Between Two.
The Moons have been touring extensively across the UK over the autumn and hit the road again in February for dates with Ocean Colour Scene.
